WASHINGTON, D.C. — A shooting investigation that began Thursday morning in Prince George’s County, Maryland, ended with a dramatic police response near Union Station after authorities said the suspected gunman fled across the state line in the victim’s vehicle.

Prince George’s County police officers responded at approximately 9:10 a.m. to the 5300 block of Sheriff Road following a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found an adult man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Emergency personnel transported the victim to a hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Investigators believe the person responsible for the shooting took the wounded man’s vehicle and drove toward Washington, D.C.

Authorities located the vehicle after it entered the District. The Metropolitan Police Department said another law-enforcement agency—not MPD—was following the vehicle when it reached the area surrounding Union Station.

Police said the suspect abandoned the vehicle near the busy transportation center and attempted to escape on foot. Officers quickly moved into the area and took one person into custody near F Street and North Capitol Street.

The sudden police activity caused tense moments for commuters, travelers and workers around Union Station. Witnesses reportedly saw officers rushing from their vehicles and chasing a person while ordering members of the public to get down.

Authorities also searched the surrounding area for a firearm. Police indicated that additional people may have been inside the fleeing vehicle, although officials did not immediately confirm whether anyone else was detained or remained wanted.

Despite the heavy police presence and urgent search, MPD said there was no active threat to the Washington, D.C., community.

The identity of the person taken into custody had not been publicly released as of Thursday evening. Authorities also had not announced specific criminal charges or explained what may have led to the shooting.

Investigators are expected to examine evidence recovered from the vehicle, review surveillance recordings and interview witnesses as they work to reconstruct the suspect’s movements between Sheriff Road and Union Station.

The case involves coordination across jurisdictions because the original shooting occurred in Maryland while the arrest happened in Washington, D.C. Prince George’s County investigators are expected to handle the shooting investigation, while District authorities may assist with evidence and any alleged offenses committed after the vehicle entered the city.

The wounded man’s condition remained critical but stable in the latest public update.
